Thomas Mueller celebrated signing a new contract with Bayern Munich by helping the Bundesliga champions to win the pre-season German Supercup clash with runners-up Schalke on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, a revelation for Germany at the 2010 World Cup after scoring five goals, broke the deadlock in the second half in Augsburg before Miroslav Klose sealed a 2-0 win.

Before the match, he agreed a two-year extension to his previous deal, which was due to expire in 2013.

Thomas Müller has admitted he never believed he would win the Golden Boot before the World Cup began.

Germany’s 20-year-old forward, who only made his international debut in March, scored five times in South Africa to clinch the award. David Villa, Wesley Sneijder and Diego Forlan also scored five goals, but the Müller’s three assists saw him edge out the trio.

There are easier surnames for a German footballer to possess than Müller, especially if you happen to be a Bayern Munich striker. There can be no avoiding comparisons with the legendary Gerd Müller, but this eloquent and intelligent young man seems to have his feet firmly planted on the ground.

Thomas Müller has exploded onto the top flight scene in his first full season as a pro, and surely has the potential to be a major discovery for Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

Coach Joachim Loew has been dealt yet another injury scare in the build-up to next month’s World Cup with young attacker Thomas Mueller having picked up an injury on Wednesday.

Mueller fell off his bike during a mountain bike trip with the Nationalelf and sustained several wounds as a result of the crash, most notably wounds to his knee and chin.

The wound on Mueller’s chin had to be stitched by national team doctor Josef Schmitt. The German football association emphasised that Mueller didn’t suffer any muscular problems though and his World Cup participation is not in danger.
