Germany reveals new kit for World Cup 2014

The German national team will wear an all-white football strip at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The DFB and adidas unveiled the new home shirt today in Munich.

The kit consists of the traditional white shirt paired with white shorts, and is reminiscent of the strip worn when West Germany beat Poland 1-0 to reach the World Cup Final in 1974. “The white shorts symbolise Germany’s light, effortless style of play,” said Jürgen Rank, head designer of football wear at adidas. “It’s a statement of class, elegance and passion for the game.”

The most striking feature of the new kit is the graphic across the chest, coloured in different shades of red as a stylised interpretation of the German flag. The three stars on the chest signify Germany’s three World Cup titles in 1954, 1974 and 1990. Several design elements, such as the new DFB logo, are finished in silver to give the home shirt a refined look.

“It’s great that the new kit is all one colour, from the socks right up to the shirt,” said national team captain Philipp Lahm. Defender Mats Hummels added: “It’s really good that the shirt design is so different and more eyecatching than before.”

The new kit weighs a whopping 40 percent less than what the team wore for the 2012 European Championships which, in its own right, was very light. Per adidas, the weight reduction will allow players “extra freedom of movement and comfort, while retaining resilience and durability” over the course of the 2014 World Cup.

The new shirt was first revealed to the national team’s fans as part of a digital fan event, and a new advertising campaign will be launched on television, in cinemas and online this Wednesday under the slogan: “Unsere Farben oder keine” (“Our colours or nothing”). The new all-white strip will make its match debut this Friday in the friendly against Italy in Milan.
