Stars rested for Poland friendly

Coach Joachim Löw is set to make seven changes to his side for Tuesday’s friendly against Poland in Gdansk, with Mesut Özil, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Manuel Neuer among those being rested.

Having all played in the 6-2 victory over Austria on Friday night which confirmed Germany’s place at Euro 2012, none of the trio made the trip to Poland, while defender Benedikt Hoewedes was also left behind with a groin strain.

“We have ready-made replacements for every position,” said Löw, who also admitted his delight at being able to give fringe players a chance after Germany secured their place at the Euro 2012 finals.

Werder Bremen’s Tim Wiese is set to replace Neuer in goal, with Christian Traesch, Jerome Boateng and Arsenal new boy Per Mertesacker all coming into a defence where captain Philipp Lahm should keep his place at left-back.

Toni Kroos will partner Simon Rolfes in central midfield, while in front of them young star Mario Goetze, who came off the bench to score the last goal in the 6-2 win against Austria in Gelsenkirchen on Friday, will start.

Andre Schuerrle or Thomas Mueller could take the spot on the right wing, with Lukas Podolski on the left and Miroslav Klose leading the line.

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender has also been called into the squad for the first time.

The 18-man German squad travelled to Gdansk on Monday, with this trip having special meaning for their Euro 2012 preparations. Germany are expected to base themselves in the Baltic resort of Sopot, near Gdansk, for the Euro 2012 finals, which will be held from June 8 to July 1 in Poland and Ukraine.

The match against Poland will also be a special occasion for Podolski and Klose, as both will be playing in the country of their birth for the first time.
