Reus gets call-up for Germany

Coach Joachim Löw has named Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Marco Reus as the only rookie in the German national squad for three upcoming international matches.

Germany face Uruguay in a friendly match in Hoffenheim at the end of the month before travelling to Vienna to face Austria and to Baku to play Azerbaijan in Euro 2012 qualifiers in the first week of June.

Reus is one of 23 players in Löw’s squad and the list also includes Simon Rolfes, returning after a long injury absence. However, there is still no sign of former team captain Michael Ballack.

“Michael has not been nominated for the next three internationals and I have informed him of my decision,” said Löw. “We have been in touch for the last few weeks and we also met at the end of March.”

Reus gets the call-up to the senior team after impressing with his recent form in Monchengladbach’s relegation battle. He was actually first called up in May last year for a friendly against Malta but had to withdraw from the squad due to a leg injury he picked up.

“Marco has developed interestingly and he has good prospects,” said Löw. “He has been playing really well in the Bundesliga in recent weeks and has been incredibly dangerous in front of goal. He has deserved to be called up.”

So too has Rolfes, who was a key player for Löw before he damaged knee ligaments last year to miss most of the season. He will be hoping to add to the 21 caps he has earned so far.

“Now the time has come for Simon to be given another chance after his long injury absence,” said Löw. “We had never written him off. He has worked hard on himself this year and has often been in a good condition.”

The injured Jerome Boateng and Per Mertesacker, who both had been part of the games against Australia and Kazakhstan, are not on the roster this time around. Commenting on Mertesacker, Löw said: “We agreed that he should use the time to recover from his injuries, so that he’s ready for next season.”

Löw felt similar about the status of Heiko Westermann. Following a talk between Löw and the Hamburg player, Westermann will use this summer to recuperate.

The Germany squad will gather in Frankfurt on May 27 to prepare for the Uruguay match two days later. They will then fly to Austria for what could prove to be a decisive Euro 2012 qualifier on June 3 before travelling to face Azerbaijan on June 7.
