Löw impressed with Ballack’s recent form

Coach Joachim Löw said on Sunday he is impressed with the recent form of former captain Michael Ballack as the 34-year-old looks to return to international football.

Ballack made the last of his 98 appearances for Germany in the pre-World Cup friendly with Argentina in March 2010 before suffering back-to-back injuries.

Having damaged his ankle playing for Chelsea in last May’s FA Cup final, which kept him out of the 2010 World Cup, Ballack then fractured a leg in September after returning to play in Germany for Bayer Leverkusen. He returned to action in January, but Löw has repeatedly said the battling midfielder will need to win back his place in the national side.

“He is improving physically and is in good shape,” Löw told German daily the Cologne Express. “That’s what I expected. He makes a good impression, he exudes authority and calm on the pitch.”

Germany next play Uruguay in a friendly on May 29 before Euro 2012 qualifiers against Austria and Azerbaijan in June, which could seal their place in next year’s tournament with the team currently at the top of the group.

Löw has said he will talk to Ballack to discuss the situation, but the veteran faces a tough task as standing in his way are Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger and Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira, who have cast doubt on Ballack’s importance in the national team with a string of impeccable performances.

Do you think Ballack has what it takes to make it back into the lineup of the national team for Euro 2012? Or do you think the younger players have replaced him and there is no longer a need for him on the team?

I love Ballack and have a ton of respect for him as a player. However, to beat teams like Spain you need quickness and that is something the younger players have. I fear bringing Ballack back could mess up the team’s chemistry.
