Podolski admits he’s ‘the idiot’ after missing penalty during defeat

Germany forward Lukas Podolski, guilty of missing a penalty in their 1-0 defeat against Serbia during their World Cup Group D meeting, has branded himself “the idiot” having failed to convert from the spot.

Joachim Loew’s side, reduced to 10 men following the sending off of Miroslav Klose, were beaten thanks to a Milan Jovanovic goal, and despite having chances, the Germans were unable to take anything from the game.

Podolski, who has 39 international goals to his name, believes that the team’s failure to claim a point from the game is largely his fault.

“We are of course disappointed,” the Koeln striker said.

“I think that my penalty was not that bad, but the keeper reacted very good. If I score a goal with the penalty, we would have got one point. So that’s my fault.

“I think we played a good second half, having much more chances to score. I had the chance to score maybe three goals.

“Against Australia we scored with these chances. But that’s it. At one day you are the hero, and at another one you are the idiot.”

The former Bayern Munich star was also disappointed with the referee’s decision to send off Klose for two largely innocuous first half challenges.

“The yellow and red cards were too harsh in my opinion. But the referee decided and we have to live with this decision,” he added.

Germany now have three points from two games and really need a win from their final group game, against Ghana, to qualify for the last 16.

“Now we have to look forward to the match against Ghana,” added Podolski. “We hope that we can win this.”

    Germany will still great, and sure will qualify to the 2nd round, in spite of the all, specialy porker son “Spanish referee”. Serbia (11 men)+(Spanish referee) + Chance= 1:0 against great 10 men named the German.
    This is GERMANY will still above …

    So Germany played against all odds today (trigger happy ref, down a goal and a man) yet they fought to the end. What we saw today was the german resolve. The serbs were spectacular and had a tough battle to keep the lead but we saw the strength of the Germans to keep fighting to the last whistle. They have nothing to be ashamed about. This was always going to be a tough game and they responded well to the pressure. In the end it wasn’t enough but they were put to the test and absolutely get an A for effort. And I have to say Podolski is not idiot for getting his pk saved. A pk is 50-50 and he was up against quite a keeper!

    Podolski is responsible bcz he played selfishly and did not cooperate with his teammates. Also, leo should have taken him out. I mean it is frustrating how he took out Ozil and Muller, they were doing way better than this idiot, Podolski

    As a huge fan of deutschland team i am a bit skeptical of germany winning the prize. With teams like brazil and argentina who can change their tactis mid game… germany is slow to adapt n deal with such changes.

    First & foremost the harm is done. enough said about the trigger happy referee & Prince Poldi’s royal miss. The fact remains a 10 man Germany played brilliantly but the gods were not smiling on our team. lets move onto the next game. Ghana takes on Aussies today, which I am expecting a draw or a Ghana win. Which will take Ghana on 6 points. If Serbia wins their last game against Aussies, they will finish on 6 points too. In short its a must win game for the germans against Ghana. Which I expect them to win. It will all come down to the following :

    For the World Cup tournament, FIFA uses the following criteria to rank teams in the Group Stage.
    1.greatest number of points in all group matches;
    2. goal difference in all group matches;
    greatest number of goals scored in all group matches;
    3.greatest number of points in matches between tied teams;
    4.goal difference in matches between tied teams;
    5.greatest number of goals scored in matches between tied teams;
    6.drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

    Germany’s 4 goals against Aussies should come handy which will help them finish top of the group !!
