Player Profile: Marcell Jansen

Despite his young age, Marcell Jansen is already considered one of his country’s most experienced internationals. The Hamburg man made a name for himself as the youngest player in the Germany squad at the 2006 World Cup and also featured at EURO 2008 in Austria/Switzerland, where he made five appearances en route to the final. Coach Joachim Low has once again placed his trust in the 24-year-old and will be hoping his dynamic runs down the flanks and expert deliveries will prove a handful for opposition defences.

Jansen is equally comfortable at left-back, though his true qualities lie in the final third, where the 1.91m whirlwind is almost unstoppable once he hits full speed. The national team’s previous coach Klinsmann realised this early on, handing the then Borussia Monchengladbach defender his international debut against Slovakia in Bratislava back in September 2005. Since then, Jansen has made over 30 appearances for the national side.

Jansen left hometown club Gladbach to join Germany’s most successful club Bayern Munich in the summer of 2007, although he struggled to secure a regular starting spot in Bavaria. He moved on to northerners Hamburg the following year and he soon established himself as one of the club’s most consistent performers, despite a number of niggling injuries, putting in a number of matchwinning performances in his first season.

Injury almost kept Jansen out of South Africa 2010 after he tore ankle ligaments at the end of March, but coach Joachim Low refused to give up on him and he has managed to recover just in time. “I am pleased for Marcell that he will be joining us,” says the Germany coach. “He brings quality to the squad.”

The road to the final has not yet come to an end; the party will go on. In South Africa, Germany and Malaysia. We are all one team. And we all have a very big goal. Together we can do it! GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL. WE LOVE YOU.
