Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has had the last laugh in his running war of words with England after his team were “simply better in every aspect” than their second round opponents.

Beckenbauer had criticised England’s style of play before it was even confirmed they would face Germany in the tournament and he is now revelling in Germany’s 4-1 victory, playing down the importance of the equaliser by Frank Lampard that was missed by officials since England were well beaten regardless.…

Germany inflicted England’s worst World Cup finals defeat ever on Sunday after a 4-1 victory in their round of 16 game.

wc training

The Germany team suffered a setback ahead of its 2010 FIFA World Cup round-of-16 clash with England in Bloemfontein. Stuttgart striker Cacau strained an abdominal muscle in training on Friday, and is out for Sunday’s match.

“This injury will not allow him to play against England,” Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff told the website of the German Football Association (DFB). “He picked up the injury in training on Friday. We are working on it so that he would be fit for the next match. We are confident he would be.”

Whether there is a next match for Germany will be determined by the outcome of Sunday’s clash with England. A key factor may be how well Miroslav Klose, the man expected to return to the starting line-up after serving his red-card suspension, plays in the lone striker role Cacau took up in Wednesday’s win over Ghana.…

Lahm said at the start of the tournament this was the best team he had ever played in, and that view has been reinforced by events so far in South Africa.

Germany could hardly have wished for a better start to the tournament, thrashing Australia 4-0 in what was probably the best performance by any side during the opening round of matches.

However, they saw their wings clipped in their second game as they were defeated 1-0 by Serbia in a match that saw Miroslav Klose sent off and Lukas Podolski miss a penalty.

That left Germany needing to win their final Group D match against Ghana to guarantee themselves a place in the last 16 and, although it was not the best of performances, Low’s men won 1-0 to finish top of the standings.…
