Löw’s confidence boosts team

Coach Joachim Löw’s unshakeable belief Germany will beat Ghana to keep their World Cup dreams alive is rubbing off on the squad, centre-back Arne Friedrich said.

After their shock 1-0 defeat to Serbia last Friday, Germany must beat Ghana at Johannesburg’s Soccer City on Wednesday to guarantee their passage from Group D into the Round of 16, while Ghana need just a point to go through.

Germany have never failed to qualify from the group stages at a World Cup before and Friedrich says the coach is convinced his side will not break that record and will resume their quest for a fourth World Cup title.

“He (Löw) leaves a very convincing impression, he has no doubts we will go through to the Round of 16 and he knows losing to Serbia was quite a blow, but he still thinks we are definitely capable of beating Ghana,” Friedrich said.

“We will certainly go full steam ahead to win the game, we just hope and pray we will.

“We have said we want to win it and you can take it for granted we will.

“It is possible we can drop out of the tournament, but we need to have confidence in our own abilities, rectify our mistakes and take our chances.”

History is on Germany’s side: the two teams have met each other just once when Ghana were beaten 6-1 in Bochum in 1993.

The Black Stars are aiming to emulate their performance from four years ago when they made the Round of 16 before losing 3-0 to Brazil and will be looking to test the German defence, but Friedrich said his side are ready.

“We have only conceded one goal in two matches, it is not just the defenders task to prevent goals, it starts from the front,” he said after Germany opened their World Cup campaign with a stunning 4-0 win over Australia.

“We know Ghana have strong players, but we need to be more compact and not make the same mistakes we made against Serbia.”
