Germans prepare with Terminator movie

The Germany squad is getting psyched-up for their opening game with Australia on Sunday by watching the entire Terminator series.

The Arnold Schwarzenegger action movies are understood to be “ideal preparation for the match,” according to Germany’s assistant coach, Hans-Dieter ‘Hansi’ Flick.

The coach has spoken of a “very confident and very calm” young German squad during a press conference in Pretoria.

Germany’s starting line-up for the Group D match against Australia has yet to be announced. Flick said that there are ‘two or three positions’ still to be decided.

In video analyses, Flick said, the team had focused in particular on Tim Cahill, Australia’s attacking midfielder. He described Cahill as a dangerous goal scorer comparable to England’s Frank Lampard.

The German captain, defender Philipp Lahm, told reporters that the team was glad the tournament was finally getting under way.

“The team is hungry and eager to get started,” remarked Lahm, who rated it the best he had played for since winning his first cap in 2004.

“We want to open with a victory, absolutely,” he said.

Lahm said Germany had better technical skills than Australia, but added: “We’ve got to be wide awake because they have strong offensive players who are especially dangerous on high balls.”

German vice captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, a midfielder, dismissed published comments by Australian keeper Mark Schwarzer suggesting Germany was weak at the goalie position. Aged 24, No. 1 keeper Manuel Neuer has been a national team member only since 2009.

“We’ve always had good goalkeepers in Germany,” Schweinsteiger said. “We’ll see Sunday who gets more shots on goal and has to distinguish himself more.”
