The German team has arrived in South Africa. The brand new Lufthansa-Airbus A380 touched down in Johannesburg Monday morning at 7.12 A.M. ahead of schedule, despite a delayed departure in Frankfurt Sunday evening.

The flight had to hold for popstar Shakira, whose connecting transfer from Madrid was late coming into Frankfurt. Shakira, who sings the official World Cup song “This time for Africa”, will perform among others at the tournament’s opening ceremony on Thursday.

“It was quite an experience, to be part of this historic first passenger flight of the A380”, said German coach Joachim Löw. Close to 800 passengers can potentially board the new Airbus.

The team then left for its base camp close to the nation’s capital of Pretoria. A first training session was set for the afternoon and it will be open to the public, with some 20,000 fans expected.

“We want to show the South Africans from the outset that we are happy to be here,” said national team general manager Oliver Bierhoff.
