French president Sarkozy lauds ‘spectacular’ Germans

With the eurozone in its worst ever crisis, the leaders of France and Germany had much to discuss Monday at a high-level diplomatic summit to thrash out how Europe should function in future.

But even high politics takes a back seat when the World Cup is on.

Speaking at a joint news conference in Berlin, French President Nicolas Sarkozy reserved his first words not for future economic policy but for the German football team who thrashed Australia 4-0 in their first World Cup game Sunday.

“My first words will be to congratulate our German friends on a remarkable start for the German football team in the World Cup. We are delighted for you. It was even pretty spectacular,” he said.
