Cloud over team accommodation cleared

The Pretoria hotel earmarked for accommodation by the German national football team has finally met the minimum safety requirements for occupation following a court order granted to the Tshwane municipality.

Owners of the Velmore Hotel in Erasmia was ordered on Friday to comply with a number of building regulations by last Monday or lose out on hosting the German team.

The owners were also slapped with a R57,950 administrative fine for contravening the National Environment Management Act.

According to Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramokgopa, the hotel was not connected to the municipality’s water and sanitation system, with a borehole being the only source of water for the hotel. The hotel also had a sewer reticulation system on site, had not submitted risk management plan for the swimming pool and spa built on Hennops River’s flood line.

She said the municipality had also not received the hotel’s structural plans signed off by a registered engineer.

“After this elaborate process and also after paying a R57 950 fine for the contravention of the National Environment Management Act and the promulgation fee of R137 951 we arrived at a point where we could positively consider that Velmore Hotel has complied with minimum standards and therefore we issued them with a provisional permission to occupy and use the premises till 31 October 2010,” she said.

The mayor said they have been following up the Velmore Hotel case closely for the past few months and “ we have been in and out of court with them”

Ramokgopa said although they wanted to make the city investor friendly, they would not tolerate non-compliance with minimum safety standards.

She said the city has in the past few months taken a firm approach and zero tolerance to buildings that did not meet minimum safety standards and regulations.
