Player Profile: Tim Wiese

10 May 2010 | Player Profile, wiese

A larger than life character who thanks to his outspoken nature and physical presence is a throwback to Toni Schumacher, Germany and Cologne’s star keeper of the 1980s.

He has an ongoing feud with former national team goalie Jens Lehmann and recently caused outrage by insisting he should be first rather than second in the national team pecking order, so he is clearly not afraid to court controversy.

Wiese is a shot-stopping ace and has a knack of saving penalties. However, he is not so strong on crosses and can be impulsive when jetting off his line – a factor that may have been holding him back in his pursuit of the German No.1 jersey.

As a schoolboy he used to play up front for Bayer Leverkusen, racking up goals a plenty for them.
