Ballack offered chance to return to Germany

Michael Ballack is being offered the chance to return home to Germany with Schalke 04.

The German midfielder’s £120,000-a-week deal with Chelsea runs out in June and the Blues are showing little appetite to renew it. That has opened the door for Schalke to try to tempt Ballack, 33, back to the Bundesliga after the World Cup.

Schalke boss Felix Magath has made Ballack his top transfer target as he attempts to build a sidecapable of winning the title.

It would be an interesting proposition for Ballack as Schalke can also offer Champions League football next season.

The Chelsea midfielder has confirmed that talks will soon take place with his current club, but he has not ruled out moving to another Premier League side.

Ballack said he would “prefer not to comment” on rumours of a move to Schalke, which “are always around when no decision has been made” about the future of a player who is set to become a free agent.

Instead, he is concentrating on helping Germany to World Cup glory in South Africa. “We, like many other nations, want to win the World Cup,” Ballack said. “We have qualified with good performances and we will be self-confident. We may have had a few dips in form in recent months, but we will prepare ourselves well.”

Ballack has scored 25 goals in 166 appearances for Chelsea but failed to make the impact expected when he signed on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in 2006.
