Rummenigge: No deal to sell Ribery to Real

Bayern Munich do not have an agreement in place to sell French midfielder Franck Ribery to Real Madrid next season, according to Bayern general director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Ribery, contracted to Bayern until 2011, wanted to join Real in the close season but the Bundesliga side refused to budge, insisting their valuable playmaker was not for sale.

“We do not have an agreement with Real to sell Franck next season. That is a fact,” Rummenigge told Munich’s Abendzeitung newspaper.

He said Ribery was also never an issue during negotiations to sign Dutch winger Arjen Robben, who joined Bayern from Real last week on a four-year deal.

“The first time I called Real Madrid (about Robben) the people there asked me whether there was any chance of getting Ribery now and I said this is not an issue,” Rummenigge said, adding there was no further talk about the Frenchman during the Robben negotiations.

Despite staying on at Bayern, Ribery has looked unhappy, missing much of the pre-season training due to injuries and admitting to a lack of contact with new coach Louis van Gaal.

“It is the first time I have not felt close to a coach,” Ribery told French newspaper L’Equipe …

Women: Germany still unbeaten after 1-0 against Iceland

Substitute Inka Grings’ second-half winner maintained Germany’s 100 per cent record in UEFA Women’s Euro 2009 Group B as Iceland ended their debut finals empty-handed.

Germany trainer Silvia Neid made six changes to the team that beat France 5-1 on Matchday 2 to secure first position in the section as she opted to give several squad members some valuable playing time.

After 10 minutes Martina Müller, starting for Inka Grings in attack, came within centimetres of scoring the first goal. The Wolfsburg striker exchanged a pass with Anja Mittag before launching a 25-metre drive that rebounded off the underside of the crossbar.

Chances elsewhere were few. Germany’s largely unchanged backline successfully keeping Iceland’s forwards away. After a goalless first half, Neid introduced Grings for Birgit Prinz. Just five minutes after taking the field, she opened the scoring with her second goal of the final tournament (50.).

Iceland had their chances later in the second half, with Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir breaking through on goal only to be denied by German Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer (64.). Eleven minutes from time, they came closer still to the goal when Katrín Jónsdóttir headed goalwards a corner kick, only for Anja Mittag to clear off the line …
