Women: Final test against Russia before Euro

Ahead of the upcoming European Championships in Finland (August 23rd – September 10th) the German women face Russia in a final test on Thursday. The match is scheduled for 5.25 pm and is played in Bochum.

Prior to the match against Russia, the defending European champions Germany defeated the Netherlands 6-0 (4-0) in Sinsheim and tied 0-0 with Japan in Mannheim.

After the two matches against the Netherlands and Japan, German coach Silvia Neid nominated her final squad for the EURO 2009. 22 players thus travel to Finland in order to defend the title. Ahead, they get the last chance to practice under competition against Russia.

So far, Germany and Russia have duelled 13 times. Germany won 11 of the matches, both teams tied twice.

The last encounter took place during the qualification for the World Cup 2007 when Germany won 3-2 (3-0) in Moscow in September, 2006. Then, Sandra Smisek, Kerstin Garefrekes and Birgit Prinz scored.

At the EURO in Finland, the German women start with the match against Norway on August, 24th. In group B, France (August 27th) and Iceland (August 30th) are the other two opponents. The German group matches all take place in Tampere.
