Corinthians deny making approach for Ze Roberto

Corinthians insist they have not had any contact with Bayern Munich midfielder Ze Roberto, who on Saturday claimed he was considering a move to the Brazilian club.

The 34-year-old told A Tribuna newspaper he was mulling over Corinthians’ offer to join them when his contract in Bavaria expires on June 30.

“Bayern offered to extend the relationship for one year and Corinthians were the only side from Brazil who called me. They want me to be there in the year of their centenary (2010) and it is a very interesting project to play the Copa Libertadores with Ronaldo in the squad,” Ze Roberto said.

But Corinthians issued a statement denying any contact has been made.

It read: “The Sport Club Corinthians Paulista are honoured by the quotes from midfielder Ze Roberto, a Bayern Munich player, expressing his interest in representing this club.

“However, Corinthians make clear that, for now, no contact with the player has been made.”

Born in Ipiranga in the state of Sao Paulo, Ze Roberto made his professional debut at Portuguesa in 1994 before moving to Real Madrid in 1997.

A year later, he returned to Brazil to play for Flamengo before a four-year spell at Bayern Leverkusen.

He transferred to Bayern Munich in 2002 and was loaned to Santos for 10 months after the 2006 World Cup.

Ze Roberto has won four Bundesliga titles and three DFB-Pokals with Bayern, and two Copa America and two Confederations Cups with the national team.
