31.10.2007: Cup holders Nuremberg out on penalties

Second division Carl Zeiss Jena knocked holders Nuremberg out of the German Cup on penalties in the second round on Wednesday.

Nuremberg, who are struggling this season in the Bundesliga, led in normal time and again during extra-time but could not finish off a Jena team that eventually came through 5-4 in the shoot-out.

Favourites Bayern Munich came safely through with a 3-1 win at home to second division leaders Borussia Moenchengladbach, thanks to two goals from Italian striker Luca Toni and one from Miroslav Klose.

The 13-times Cup winners were joined in the last 16 by Hamburg SV, who won 3-1 against Freiburg, and league champions VfB Stuttgart, who came through 3-2 in extra-time against second division SC Paderborn thanks to a late goal from Mario Gomez.

Werder Bremen hammered Duisburg 4-0 with goals from Tim Borowski, Hugo Almeida, Markus Rosenberg and Colombian teenager John Jairo Mosquera, all in the second half.

Borussia Dortmund came through another all-Bundesliga clash 2-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern took time to get going against awkward Moenchengladbach, who look set for a return to the Bundesliga following the relegation at the end of last season.

Gladbach had the better chances in the first half only for the Bavarians to sneak into a lead just after the break when Toni took advantage of a mistake from the keeper to head into an empty net at the far post.

Toni added his second with a great shot from outside the area in the 57th minute.

Marcel Ndjeng cracked a shot past Michael Rensing to give Gladbach hope with 20 minutes to go before Klose put the result beyond doubt seven minutes from time.
